MEDIA COVERAGE

Even before its official release to the public, Germs at Bay has garnered a substantial amount of public notice with stories appearing in the Writer's DigestCounterpunchNation of Change, War is a CrimeEurasia Review, and the New York Times. Earlier research on quarantine that Vidich conducted with James Bromberg continues to attract public attention including a 2005 article appearing in the Tampa Bay Times.

Dan Falk, a Toronto journalist, has just published an interview with Vidich in UnDark, a non-profit, editorially independent digital magazine exploring the intersection of science and society. The interview can be accessed at Quarantine in early Boston.

A recent Amazon review of Germs at Bay gave it five stars and said that much of the book reads like a novel. You can access that superb review at Germs at Bay Book Review. But the best review so far is that by Rene F. Najera, editor of the History of Vaccines site, an online project by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Dr. Najera states: "The voice in which the book is written reminds me of the best professors I’ve had in college, graduate school and the doctoral program. It’s not condescending or dripping with sarcasm; it is clear and reads more like a conversation with an expert than a lecture or academic paper. Germs at Bay is a great book if you are interested in the how and why of quarantines like those at Boston Harbor or New York’s Ellis Island, or the current recommendations to keep COVID for further spread." The complete review can be read at the History of Vaccines website.

Podcast on Germs at Bay with Christopher S. Rose a Social Historian of Medicine. On February 3, 2022, Dr. Rose interviewed Charles Vidich on his book, Germs at Bay which is now available as a podcast at the link below. The Podcast introduces the book as follows:

"Charles Vidich explores the surprisingly rich history of quarantine in America. It's gone through five different stages and has, at times, played a key role in the American revolutionary war, the development of immigration policy, and even spawned its own code language to prevent panic from breaking out among the public. When quarantine works well, it can save lives -- but, as Vidich argues, a number of factors have to work in sync for it to be successful, and that is rarely the case.

This book is for anyone seeking to understand the challenges of controlling the spread of COVID-19, and will help readers internalize the lessons that are being demonstrated through the handling of this pandemic. Replete with primary data from years of archival exploration, Germs at Bay demonstrates the United States' long reliance on quarantine practice, and the political, social, and economic factors at all levels of government that have influenced--and been influenced by--them."

A Highly Readable Critique of the Science and Practice of Epidemic and Pandemic Response

Epidemics and Pandemics: Your Questions Answered . By Charles Vidich  Forthcoming February 8, 2024 .   In the wake of COVID, it's more important than ever to understand epidemics-how they emerge and what we can do to fight back. Part of Bloomsbury's Q&A Health Guides series, this book takes a balanced approach, offering a blend of both epidemiological science and practical suggestions grounded in that science. The volume's 47 questions begin with the basics, including which diseases are most likely to become epidemics, which have historically been the deadliest, and how factors such as climate change will affect the emergence of future pandemics. Next, the book answers readers' questions regarding how epidemics spread and how strategies such as disease reporting, quarantine, and vaccine development can help combat them. Readers will also find questions offering guidance on how to protect yourself during a widespread disease event, including which information sourc...
